Day 81 (7/11/26) – Camachee Cove Yacht Harbor to Fernandina Harbor Marina

We cruised by miles of salt marshes today, fringed by bright green cord grass fields. We saw lots of roseate spoonbills, egrets, and herons.
The USS Carney, a guided missile destroyer, in dry dock.
An old railway swing bridge.
We crossed 3 inlets today. We got a good push from a decent ebb current in the morning so we made good time. Lots of skinny water along our route. We’re using bob423 tracks on the chart plotter to keep us out of trouble.

A quick update on our boat repairs. After getting a high engine temperature alarm on the port engine, we shut the engine down and pulled into Camachee Cove Harbor to troubleshoot and repair. Luckily, Camachee Boat Yard was nearby. The technician diagnosed the problem immediately. Initially the captain thought it was the thermostat on the raw water cooling system, but it turns out it was much simpler than that. The raw water inlet valve was left in a closed position during the last strainer cleaning, causing the engine to overheat and the cooling water pump to run dry (the impeller was mush). Luckily, we had the necessary spare parts and the repairs were completed by mid afternoon. A hard lesson to learn.

With repairs completed, we departed early this morning and had a scenic trip to Fernandina Harbor. The salt marshes were spectacular, and I suspect we’ll see much more of these as we head north. It was 96 degrees Fahrenheit when we arrived, with a light wind! 🥵🥵🥵

We plan to spend a couple of days exploring Amelia Island. Until next time – sweet dreams!

Will you continue on the ICW or go out in the ocean as you travel further north?

    1. The default is always AICW for us, but the Atlantic Ocean is an option if there are fair seas (< 2 foot wave height). We’ve been in 2 foot seas and it wasn’t pretty.
