Day 12 – Layover at Orleans Marina
We’re taking a little holiday break to spend time with family. Look for a continuation of our travels in January 2026! Rob and I wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a fabulous New Year!

Day 11 – Boomtown Casino Anchorage to Orleans Marina (Mississippi River Crossing)
Duration – 4 hours 27 minutes Distance – 26.6 miles Average speed – 7.4 mph We had excellent cruising weather today – light winds and sunny. Today was a milestone day for us. We crossed the mighty Mississippi River via the Algiers Lock followed by the Industrial Canal Lock. We transitioned from the GIWW to…

Day 10 – Houma Downtown Dock to Boomtown Casino Anchorage
Today’s cruising weather was overcast, windy and chilly. It took us longer than expected to find a suitable anchorage. Thank you, Waterway Guide!! With each passing day, my situational awareness on the water improves. I’m on a very steep learning curve but getting better. Tomorrow we’ll cross the Mississippi River and reach our marina in…

Day 9 – Morgan City Marina to Houma Downtown Dock
Another great run! One lock and many tugs later, we’re safely anchored at a cute public dock in downtown Houma, just yards from the GIWW. We saw a total of 11 bald eagles on this leg! They love to hang out in the tall cypress trees along the banks. We had a lovely dinner at…

Day 8 – Morgan City Layover
A very chilly night with strong north winds and low tide turned into a sunny and cool day with light winds. We spent the morning doing boat chores and then walked to Rita Mae’s for a delicious fried shrimp and crab burger lunch. We briefly explored the downtown area and saw some lovely old homes.…

Day 7 – Morgan City Layover
Today was a layover day in Morgan City. Wind speeds are high (17-18 mph as the cold front pushes through) and temperatures are low (upper 40’s, soon to drop to low 30’s), so we’ll wait things out until it warms. We spent a lovely day with Michelle and Chuck Boudreaux of Berwick, Louisiana. Michelle and…

Day 6 – Shell Morgan Marina to Morgan City Marina
Fog and eagles and bridges, oh my! Another lovely day on the ICW. Very light traffic with exceptional weather (except for the early morning smoke fog, that is). I’m getting Aqua Map dialed in – it’s been extremely helpful as a navigation aid. We saw 8 bald eagles along the way. We are securely tied…

Day 5 – Mermentau River to Shell Morgan Marina
Another good cruising day with warm temperatures and party cloud skies. We had dinner with our friends Patricia and Tim Boudreaux at Shucks in Abbeville. The raw oysters and soft shell crab were amazing! Tomorrow we’re off to Morgan City for a few days to wait out a cold blast.

Day 4 – Calcasieu River Oxbow to Mermentau River
We had another lovely cruising day with sunny skies, light winds, and cool temperatures. Last night’s anchorage was a bit of a challenge (shallow depths) due to silting from past storms, along with wind and water current effects. We would not recommend anchoring there! We carefully retraced our steps into the Calcasieu and once again…

Day 3 – Taylor Outfall to Calcasieu River Oxbow
We’re safely anchored off the Calcasieu River in Lake Charles this evening. My view is the Calcasieu Refining plant. I can practically smell the money. Today’s cruising theme was barges, barges, and more barges. Throw in a tanker for good measure! Incredible commercial traffic on this waterway (Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, or GIWW). It’s a well-oiled…
