Day 111 (8/11/26) – Layover in Southport with a side trip to Bald Head Island

Mark and his wife Kim live full time on Bald Head Island.My view shortly after crossing the mouth of the Cape Fear River with 15-20 mph winds. It was a wet ride!Rob, Mark, Kim, and me.Old Baldy Lighthouse. Built in 1817, it is the oldest standing lighthouse in the state. Located on Bald Head Island at the mouth of the Cape Fear River, NC, it’s an octagonal tower standing 110 feet tall with a weathered, mottled stucco and brick exterior. It was deactivated as an active navigational aid in 1935, but preserved as a historic landmark and museum site.The original “Cape Fear” movie released in 1962 with Robert Mitchum as Max Cady. The 1991 remake with De Niro as Max Cady was a big hit.The 2026 AppleTV series with Javier Bardem as Max Cady has lots of new plot twists.Colorful crab traps. A standard commercial or recreational box-style crab trap (or crab pot) works like a baited one-way maze. It uses a weighted wire-mesh box with inward-pointing funnel entrances (“throats”) that let crabs walk in toward the bait but prevent them from finding their way back out. It looks like he’s holding the channel marker!We got a first class tour of the entire island from Mark, all from the comfort of his golf cart. There was not a bad view to be found. Salt marshes, tidal creeks, ample beaches, and first class amenities make Bald Head Island a great destination.“Porch Time” with Robert and Kay Creech.
I’m combining our travel and layover days into one spectacular blog! We had a good cruise on 8/10 to Morningstar Marina in Southport. Winds were sassy but the deck hands and the captain were able to hold her close to the dock while we got her tied up. Shortly after, Mark Scagnelli picked us up at the dock in his 22 foot center console and we set off for Bald Head Island for an overnight stay, hosted by Mark and his lovely wife, Kim. We had dinner and a good night’s rest. Today we toured the island, followed by a leisurely lunch. Then it was off to the ferry terminal for our return trip to Biscuit. A great adventure!
To top off a great day, we had “Porch Time” with Robert and Kay Creech from Southport. Robert and Kay are AGLCA harbor hosts. They are long standing AGLCA members who continue to give back to the boating community by sharing their deep knowledge of The Great Loop, which we greatly appreciate.
Tomorrow is our last travel day to Wilmington before we return to Seabrook for a recharge. We plan to return in late September and take Biscuit to the Chesapeake Bay for the winter months. Until next time – sweet dreams!
