Day 46 (2/22/26) – Layover at Cape Haze Marina (Englewood)

Caspersen Beach, South Venice. We found a few fossilized sharks teeth here.
An empty lightning whelk egg case, found along a high tide wrack line on Caspersen Beach.
Essential gear for shark tooth hunting – a “Florida snow shovel” (right) and a sifter (left). This is a high volume operation!
I dropped my pin! Enjoying Cuban sandwiches for lunch at Havana Soul Paradise, Englewood.
Fossilized sharks teeth from the Miocene era, found on Caspersen Beach and Manasota Key Beach. Just off Venice Beach is an exposed formation that is constantly weathering out, and fossils wash ashore regularly. Larger megalodon teeth can be found in deeper waters.
I just can’t resist these beautiful Florida shells! Calico clams and turkey wings were plentiful here.

Shark tooth hunting was the highlight of our stay in the Venice area. Biscuit was docked in Englewood, a sleepy little town to the south. We rented a car and explored the coast to the north. We visited Venice Inlet, Caspersen Beach, Manasota Key Beach, and Stump Pass Beach. The sand is quite coarse and dotted with phosphate granules (a good sign that there are shark teeth nearby). Large shell deposits were plentiful, too.

Crowds are thick and traffic is heavy this time of year, and now I know why! The weather is incredible. We’re waiting out a big blow today and tomorrow and plan to make our way to Boca Grande on Tuesday for more beach combing. Until next time – sweet dreams!
